Auron and Valberg are the other two resorts in the Alpes-Maritimes, in the Mercantour National Park, and they are not easy to reach from one another: Auron sits above Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée at the head of the Tinée valley, while Valberg is reached via the Var valley and the Cians gorges. An hour of driving separates the two despite a short distance as the crow flies. Auron, a village resort, has kept its Romanesque church and its stone buildings; Valberg, higher and more compact, is known for its family skiing. Both live off winter but stay active in summer for hiking and mountain biking. From Nice Airport, allow 1 hr 45 on mountain roads, with winter equipment mandatory for much of the season.
